The Placid Tower

The "state of the art" project is now home to the Spiteri family. The estate boasts outstanding architecture and timeless character and now it also incorporates an environmentally conscious composition.

Although modest in comparison to other historic structures that "litter" the islands, the centuries old "Ghorfa" (formerly known as "It-Torri ta' Menzju") is being sympathetically restored to its original state. These Berber inspired architectural structures were once used to store grain and animal feed and are now rapidly disappearing from the Maltese landscape. Their preservation is of high cultural value and will be an inspiration to future generations.

The estate is comprised of the two ancient tower-ghorfas, a farmhouse and extensive gardens that offer a high standard of living.

Subterranean re-excavations are underway to repair ancient water-wells and subterranean quarters that had been covered over by decaes of debris and neglect under previous ownership.

When complete, 18,000 blocks of recovered stone will make up the main farmhouse. The farmhouse is warmed by means of a complex system of water-pipes embedded in the flooring. The pipes run through each room warming the entire structure by means of a central boiler.

Two feet thick walls, and hundreds of feet of polyurethane sealant foam ensures systematic insulation.  During warm seasons, the structure is kept cool by means of a series of air ducts, strategically placed throughout the property. The air ducts make use of natural wind that is collected through special apertures around the perimeter of the property. A number of large reservoirs make for a consistent natural supply of water.
